Find the frequency of sound produced. b) Where should he press with his finger if he wants to produre a note E of frequency 330Hz?(Neglect the change in tension of the string when it is pressed.) c) Consider your answer in (b), if the change in tension of the string when it is pressed is taken into account, how should he adjust the position of his finger?

最佳解答:

(a) When a fundamental note is produced on the string, the wavelength = 2 x length of string. hence, wavelength = 2 x 0.695 m = 1.39 m Frequency = speed of wave/wavelength = 407.7/1.39 Hz = 293 Hz (b) Wavelength on string = 407.7/330 m = 1.235 m Hence, length of string set into vibration = half wavelength = 1.235/2 m = 0.6175 m Therefore, the student shuld press at the position of 0.62 m (c) Pressing on the string increases the tension, causing the speed of wave on the string to increase (because speed is proportional to the square-root of string tension). An increase of wave speed increases the wavelength, thus the position should be longer than before. .
