Silver oxide, also known as silver rust and argentous oxide, is a fine black or dark brown powder with the formula Ag2O. Preparation Silver oxide is commercially available. It can be prepared by precipitating it from an aqueous solution of silver nitrate by the action of an alkali hydroxide Chemistry Silver oxide is poorly soluble in water (1 part in 40,000), but dissolves in nitric acid solution and ammonium hydroxide solution, and is slightly soluble in aqueous solutions of alkali hydroxides. It is insoluble in alcohol and nonpolar solvents.Solution in alkali hydroxide solutions is due to the formation of the ion, Ag(OH)2–.Silver oxide dissolved in neutral aqueous solution exists as an ionized hydroxide (Ag+ OH–). Silver oxide reacts with hydrofluoric, hydrochloric, hydrobromic, or hydroiodic acids to form the respective silver halides. It will also react with solutions of alkali chlorides to precipitate silver chloride, leaving a solution of the corresponding alkali hydroxide Like many silver compounds, silver oxide decomposes on exposure to light into its constituents. It also decomposes at temperatures above 200°C.
